School's Out For Summer.
Last day of term-who can believe how quickly the year has gone by. It seems like only a few weeks ago since we heard the story of the little mouse Chrysanthemum (scroll to the end of the page to refresh your memory!) and now here we are packing up and saying goodbye to our wonderful 3rd Class. Clíona, Sasha, Lauren, Donagh, Cian, John, Padraig and Odhrán what a super 3 years we have had together.
I will always remember you as my first Rang 1 in Burgess NS and I hope you have laughed lots, enjoyed much and have at least learned what wonderful and talented people you are.I know you will continue to let your light shine as you progress through the school and we will miss you greatly in our classroom next year.
It is also time to say goodbye to Mr Sheehy who was working with 1st and 2nd Class in our school this year. Many thanks for all your hard work with us agus go n-éirí an t-ádh leat i gcónaí.
The sun is shining, the bell is ringing-have a wonderful summer and check back in September for more adventures in our classroom!

Summer Term-Lots of learning out of our seats!!!
In May the sun came out to play and so did we with lots of learning taking place out of our seats in the great outdoors classroom. We went on a tree trail in the school grounds, we went on a summer nature walk, we went on a local history site visit, we had a shape hunt, our annual spring clean, we went measuring and that was all before the mega-12 hour school tour and Sports day. Of course World Cup fever didn't only hit Russia we had our own version under a scorching June sun with Poland being our winning team! What an action packed 2 months we had.

Watercolour Birds
Before we take flight for our summer holidays we did some wonderful watercolour paintings depicting birds in summer. These took great concentration and effort but I know anybody loooking will agree that the finished paintings speak for themselves-definitely worth framing!

School Tour 2018
8:00 am, 22nd June 2018, the sun shone brightly on us as we set off on the much anticipated school tour to Cork. There was no dragging of feet or late comers to school that morning. Instead of bags of books we were armed with bags of treats and the teachers were armed with bags of ....... sick bags!!! Just in case of the worst!
We sang most of the way to Cork and first stop was Fota Wildlife Park where we enjoyed a great tour seeing and learning about the diverse range of animals who call Fota home. We also got to go on a mini-beast hunt deep in the park which we got so engrossed in that we ran short on time and had to get a train back up to the car park to catch our bus.
Next stop was the Titanic experience in Cobh where we heard the real life accounts of those passengers who boarded the ill-fated ship in Cobh in 1912. On reaching the museum we each got a passsenger ticket representing one of the 123 men/women/children who stood in the very room we were standing as they waited to board the ship. We got to find out at the end whether we survived or perished. Unfortunately many of the boys died as we heard that the women and children got the life boats before the men. It was all very interesting. In Cobh we got to see the statue of Annie Moore whom we had learned about earlier in year and we gave a rendition of Isle of Hope in her honour!
Next stop ( following a short nap for some on the bus!) were the Mitchelstown caves, the first cave system in Ireland developed for the public in 1972. As we made our way deep underground one could only marvel at the bravery of the farm worker Michael Condon who accidentally discovered it and ventured through it in 1833.
After a very informative tour of the caves we had worked up a huge appetite so our last stop was at the big M for a feed!
We returned to school almost 13 hours after we departed, tired but happy, the bags empty and hopefully memories that will last a lifetime!
The teachers certainly slept well that night!!

World Cup-Burgess Style
We picked our favourite countries-we studied the flags-Odhrán was our flag expert extraordinaire, made our predictions and then we finally heard what team we would be playing for.
We had very exciting games leading to quarter and semi finals lots of which ended in penalty shoot outs. Poland came out victorious in the end -we'll have to see if that turns out to be true in the FIFA version which could hardly be as exciting as the Burgess one!
Thanks to 6th class who helped our class out-Marie and Iris the referees and Michael and Harry the goal keepers for the matches.

Bringing Home the Ogham!
We learned about the early medieval alphabet used by the Celts called the Ogham alphabet.
We made some ogham name necklaces in clay which turned out pretty well.

Spring Clean 2018.......no piece of rubbish will be spared!
Having watched Éanna Ní Lamhna's Tree Trails on the interactive whiteboard our very own Éanna AKA Noreen came to visit to tell us all about our local trees, plants, insects and much much more. Check out the future David Attenboroughs in the slideshow below!
Knit Wits 2018
Thanks to Jean, Bridget, Kay and Róisín who give of their time each week this term to help out with Knitwits knitting club. 3rd class are total knitting machines at this stage-producing headbands, scarves, wristbands on a weekly basis. Hopefully we'll need a few blue and gold or green and yellow ones this summer to cheer our teams on. Ms Quigley would never have mananged without the adult help and would only have ended up tying herself up in a ball of wool! Hopefully this is a skill you will get to enjoy using again in the future.

Not too much of this thanks to the helpers!
Gymnastics Fun........Ouch!!!
The ouch is only for Ms Quigley and not for our super fit and flexible girls and boys who can bend like elastic-hand stands, head stands, splits, cartwheels ... piece of cake for those of us who can twist and bend in all directions. Rody told us about the splits challenge-3 minutes a day regular practice up to 12 years of age means you will develop a skill and flexibilty you will have for your whole life. Unfortunately Ms Quigley is out of time for this deadline so it would take more than 3 minutes a day to make her super flexible but she's up for the challenge!! She'll let us know next year how she is doing! |
Thank You to 2nd Class from Trócaire
Every year 2nd Class have the opportunity to make a donation from money they received for their First Communion to a chosen charity. We try to link in with a charity that is meaningful to us each year. This year after having a visit from Lauren who told us all about the plight of Kumba the 7 year old whose family was one of the very few who survived the devastating landslide in Freetown, Sierra Leone, we decided to make our donation to help support families there.
2nd Class very generously donated €120 to Trócaire and we know this will make a huge difference to the children in Sierra Leone who are not as fortunate as us.

April Food Dudes
After a chocolate-filled Easter we returned to school ready to embark on the Food Dudes healthy eating programme. With a daily delivery of fresh fruit and vegetables we embarked on testing and tasting every morning. It was fantastic to see how most people were open to trying fruits and vegetables they may have previously refused and some had never tasted before. Each day we also tuned in to see the adventures of the young food dude super-heroes-Charlie, Tom, Raz and Rocco who gain special powers to save the world by eating their favourite fruits and vegetables. They are up against the Junk Punks-General Junk and Miss Demeanour and Master Disaster who are trying to drain the energy of the world by depriving it of nutritious foods. The real success of this programme was when we saw those fruits and vegetables starting to make their way into the lunch boxes. Well done to all for taking part and thanks to the Mums and Dads who included new nutritious foods in the lunches.

Spring Is In The Air.......................................... Finally!
We certainly got to leave our snow scenes up for longer than planned as there seemed to be no sign of Spring arriving this year! The Beast from the East and Storm Emma hit on 28th February giving us 2 very unexpected snow days off school and after that Ms Quigley decided we would make some spring flowers from paper, paint some daffodils with some people using acrylics and others pastels to try to encourage Spring along.
Maybe Winter decided it was time to retreat and give the lovely season of Spring a chance to bloom and grow!

I Love You to the Moon and Back Mum
We are all so lucky to have wonderful Mothers who love us very much. Mother's Day is a chance every year for us to say Thank You to our Mums who do so much for us. In school we learned about the ancient craft of paper quilling and we tried our hand at making some quilled cards for Mum for Mother's Day. 3rd class got to use quilling tools and 1st and 2nd rolled larger paper coils. We were very happy with how the cards turned out.
Happy Mother's Day from all in Rang 1,2,3.

Mr Sheehy took 1st and 2nd Class to a hurling blitz in Nenagh on 21st February. It was a great to escape the classroom and head off on the bus for a fun afternoon of hurling. Mr Sheehy said there were stars in the making to be seen that day-the future of Burgess GAA is safe and well!

A Visit From Ted and Heather!
We love having visitors to our class and we were really excited to welcome a delightful little 4 legged visitor called Ted and his owner Heather. Heather works for Dogs Trust Ireland and she came to visit our class and talk to us about being a responsible dog owner and staying safe around dogs. We learned how to react around dogs and be respectful of them. Ted was the quietest visitor we ever had and everybody who wanted to got a chance to pet him.

Chinese New Year February 2018
In SESE we learned about some of the traditions associated with the Chinese New Year. This year is the Year of the Dog
Chinese New Year is a time when families get together to celebrate.
Houses are cleaned from top to bottom. The aim is to sweep out any bad luck from the old year and clear the way for good luck. It is considered bad luck to wash your hair on New Year’s Day.
Families put lights up outside their homes, rather like Christmas lights. Doors and windows are often newly painted in red.
People light firecrackers which make a series of loud bangs. The idea is that the bangs scare away bad luck.
People eat delicious food including egg parcels which are thought to look like gold bars to bring prosperity, noodles which are thought to bring long like and shrimps which look like smiley faces to bring happiness.
During the festival people go to large colourful parades where the dress up, play music, bang gongs and play drums,
Children are given red envelopes with money inside with good wishes written in gold ink on the outside. Red is chosen for luck and gold for prosperity.
We heard the legend behind the Race of the Animals to name the Chinese Years and also the Legend of the monster of Nian. Red was supposed to be the colour which frightened away the monster. The monster was also scared of loud noises-I think he would be really scared in our classroom some days!
We made Chinese lanterns and coloured pictures creating our own little Chinese corner in the classroom. It is really red!! The monster of Nian would be terrified!

Grandparents Day 2nd February 2018
'Grandparents hold our hands for a short time but they hold our hearts forever'
We look forward to welcoming our lovely Grandparents to our school for Grandparent's Day each year. This year we each painted and decorated a handprint for the stage display. We drew pictures of our grandparents and wrote a poem about them also. Check out some samples of our work in the gallery below.
On the day it was great to show our grandparents around the school and then after a short service our class sang 2 songs that we thought our grandparents might remember from their time in school-Baidín Fheidhlimí agus Óró 'sé do bheatha bhaile. It was nice to see our grandparents singing along with us!
Diarmuid's Grand Aunt Mary gave a fantastic demonstration on how butter was made in the olden days using a butter churn. It was really interesting for us to see how the churn worked and we were really grateful to Mary for coming to our school.
After that it was time for a cuppa and we were very excited in our class to be in charge of the catering department and it was like the Gret Burgess Bake Off with the array of cakes and buns that we brought in.
Nobody went home hungry that day anyhow.
Some Grandparents couldn't visit us on the day so we have some photos below to show that we did not forget you and we love you very much. Check out your grandchildren in the slideshow below if you could not come to our school that day.

January 2018
We came back to school full of news about the toys Santa brought us.
We got straight back to work for the busy term ahead.
We learned about the Water Cycle and we learned a good song called THe Water Cycle Song to help us remember the big words like condensation, evaporation, precipitation and collection.
Check out this link to sing it at home- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWb4KlM2vts
In keeping with the Water Cycle theme in Art we made our own water cycle on a paper plate and then we made a group Frieze of the Water Cycle outside our class.
In Science we made rain clouds with shaving foam and used coloured water in a water dropper to show how the clouds collect water droplets for a while and then they eventually fall down form the cloud.
Check them out our Water Cycle themed work below

End of Term 1 December 2017:
What a busy term we have had and the last 2 weeks were no exception! We had our school concert on 14/12/2017 and we were so excited to get on stage! We had very word, dance, song, grunt, moo and cock-a-doodle practiced and we were ready to rock and roll!
On the night Ms Quigley was thrilled to have her very own elves/past pupils -Katie, Caoimhe,Tara, Niamh and Keeva come back to help with the face paint. The girls were really superb with the make-up sponges and really helped to make all our animals look the part.
On the night it was our best performance ever and Ms Quigley,Jean and Mr Sheehy were so proud of how everybody did their very best on stage.
Well Done -you were really super and are all stars in the making!
(Thanks once again to the parents for supplying the costumes, to Mr Sheehy for taking charge of the sound, to Caoimhe, Katie and Marianne for all their help back stage and Jean for taking charge of everything else! Your help and support is much suppported)
In Art we were all about re-cycling materials and we created a really 'cool' polar scene making penguins from plastic bottles and snowflakes from paper. John and Donagh made a very impressive igloo from marshmallows without eating a single marshmallow as they worked! I think a few people have been having a little nibble as they passed the display since!!!! Check out the igloo in the gallery below!
We also made carol singers from toilet rolls and Christmas tree decorations from lollipop sticks. We made snow globes using cotton buds to paint snow scenes which turned out really well.
In our drawing class we studied the very popular December flower, the poinsettia and you can check out our versions below. We think they looked really good.
We also learned how to draw a snowman in a directed drawing class and they turned out really well. Check them out in the slide show.
3rd class have been doing some research on the I pads and laptops on the Stone Age to finish our work on the topic. We created a Stone Age display with cave painting and facts we learned. We also created really impressive silhouette pictures of dolmens, standing stones and stone circles from the Stone Age. Check back next month for pictures of 3rd class projects!
We have had maths stations on Fridays during Term 1. We have been working on measures-length, weight and capacity. What better way to finish maths stations on weight than by baking biscuits! We must have measured very carefully because they turned out so well and tasted so delicious!
Ms Quigley and Jean were delighted to have to great helpers in the weeks before Christmas-Caoimhe and Katie, 2 TY students from St Mary's School. Both girls were invaluable in helping out with the fun (chaos) that is Christmas in a primary school. Thank you so much girls and we hope to see you again soon.
It was a busy but brilliant term 1 with lots of learning and lots of fun too. Ms Quigley met Santa before Christmas and gave him a list of our names and told him how hard we have been working. She knows Santa will be very good to the Burgess boys and girls.
Happy Christmas to you all from Jean and Ms Quigley and we look forward to seeing you back in January for more updates of our escapades!

December News
If you pass our door these days don't be surprised if you hear cows mooing, pigs grunting and sheep bleating as we prepare for our Christmas play called Born in a Barn. The class is buzzing with excitement and anticipation as we sing the songs, perfect the dance moves and go over the lines. We have a bossy cockerel, a wise owl, a playful dog, noisy sheep, excited mice, curious cows, a posh cat, exotic camels, jumping shepherds, innkeepers that are not to be messed with and angelic angels to entertain you on the night!
Many thanks to all families who have supplied us with wonderful costumes. We know you will be delighted when you see us on stage.

Burgess' got Talent!
Almost every week somebody in our class has a medal to show us or a story to share about success at music, sport, dance or speech and drama. Well done and keep letting your talent shine.
Áine won an All Ireland medal in the Fleadh in Ennis during the summer and Hollie won a medal for singing and dancing at the School of Performing Arts in Nenagh. Well Done girls.

The Big Flood
On Wednesday 22nd November we got a message from Mrs Slattery that the road was flooded outside the school and we had to be very careful. We had to come in through the back door as there was a river running outside the front of the school. It was all very exciting and Ms Quigley took us out for a look at our little school stream which had turned into a gigantic waterfall overnight!

Science Week 2017
During Science week we did an experiment every day in school. It was great exploring liquid densities and the milk molecule gymnastics was one of our favourites!
We are very lucky because David has an Uncle who is a scientist working in a laboratory. We invited Uncle Shane to school to give us some science demonstrations. Shane set up different experiment stations where we explored air and water pressure. It was really interesting. Sasha our scientist had lots of theories about how pressure works.
Shane showed us how sound waves work and then he showed us a gauge called a refractometer which is used to measure sugar in liquids. We had to predict which drink had the most sugar- Club orange, Coke, Ribena, Diet Coke, and 7 up.
Check out the action in the slideshow below.

Cork Pops and Hunt Museum Visit
After a lovely relaxing mid-term break we had a lovely back to school treat with a visit to UL to hear the Cork Pops orchestra. We had brilliant seats in the front of the balcony with a bird's eye view of the stage. We had heard some of the pieces of music in school before the concert so it was lovely to hear the orchestra playing them . The focus was on the music of the harp so we got to see the harp up close. The harpist with the orchestra Jean Kelly has played on the sound track of many films including most recently Paddington 2. We sang some well known songs with the orchestra and DJ Dashka and Voice of Ireland winner Keith Hanley. After the concert we headed for the Hunt Museum for lunch and a tour of the museum. Rita Duffy is a renowned artist from Northern Ireland and she had an exhibition there called Alternate Truth. She had studied some of the picture, objects and artefacts in the museum and created her own interpretations of them. Firstly we had to study the objects in the museum and then spot how Rita had interpreted them in the exhibition. We also got to see some tools and utensils from the Stone and Bronze Age.
In the bible it is told that Judas betrayed Jesus for '30 pieces of silver'. In the Hunt Museum we saw one of those coins which includes a quote in Latin 'Quia precium sanguinis est' .......Because it is the price of blood.
We had a super day out and returned tired but happy!

Dancing Ghosts
In Science we figured out a way to make ghosts dance using static electricity. Firstly we made tissue paper ghosts. Then we had to run a balloon in our hair for 30 seconds. Bring the balloon near the ghost and watch it dance! Static electricity is a weird and wonderful thing-just look at our hair afterwards in the slide show below!!!!

Hallowe'en Art
Hallowe'en brings with it fun art activities in school. This year we worked on Wacky Witches Legs! Firstly we had to apply a stripey wash on the page. Next we had to design a pair of boots for our witch and colour them black. Next to work on were her tights. We could use pieces of fabric and coloured paper to create her tights.. Finally we had to make a skirt from black paper. We had to design the shape, the hem and the length of the the skirt and then decorate it. We think they look wonderfully wacky!!!!

Maths Week
Maths Week in October every year is a good opportunity to do Maths out of our seats and away from the books. We planned some surveys and carried them out in each class. We made shapes from geostrips and geoboards, we played loop games, did floor shape dominoes , we played tables challenges, we took the i pads to go on a shapes trail taking photos of shapes all around us, we had daily puzzle of the day to solve and we finished with a fun Maths Trail on Friday.
Check out the slide show below to get a flavour of what we were up to!

The Stone Age
In History we have been learning about The Stone Age (No Ms Quigley was not born then!) We learned about the hunter gathers roamed the country looking for food. They were very clever and learned that stone was useful for making tools. They also discovered that when they rubbed two pieces of flint together they got a spark which they used to light a fire. They also made pots for cooking from clay. We made our versions in school in Art class.
They were skilled artists and we took a virtual tour of the caves of Lascaux in France to look at early man's cave paintings. Without any fancy materials they created beautiful paintings that have lasted through thousands of years to be seen today. We re-created our own cave paintings in school which we will display next month.

Harvest Time
October is a busy time for the farmer harvesting the crops sown in the spring. We harvested our vegetables planted in the raised bed last May.
We had a great harvest of radishes that some people brought home and Lily declared were 'delicious'!
We didn't have an enormous harvest of parsnips but we did manage to grow AN ENORMOUS PARNSIP that was way taller than most people in the class.

Chrysanthemum
On the first week of school we heard the story of Chrysanthemum, the little mouse with the big heart. She loved her name and thought it was very special until she went to school and some of the other mice made fun of it. Everytime one of the mice said something mean to Chrysanthemum Ms Quigley put a little cut on her picture of Chrysanthemum and everytime somebody said something nice she taped up the picture. We learned from this story how words can cut us up inside and that even though we look the same on the outside the cuts are still inside, though taped up by nice words and kind deeds. Happily there was a good ending to the story when Chrysanthemum met her teacher Delphinium. We will try to remember the message of this story this year as we try to treat one another with kindness and respect. Check out our pictures of Chrysanthemum below. They look great.

Water Fun!
Last Friday we had a great surprise as some people who work with North Tipperary County Council visited the school and brought us outside to see how the water hydrants worked. The hydrant was opened up and we were amazed to see the water gushing out! Some people got a chance to open and close the hydrant and we heard some interesting facts abut the pipes under the ground. Check out the slideshow below to see our excitement!
